FREE ADMISSION; support the artists and store!
Red Emma’s is
moving next year—so this will be not only the first Red Emma’s
Mother Earth Poetry Vibe in person since the pandemic began, but also
our last at our 1225 Cathedral Street location. Come celebrate this
location with us! Join us for an online open mic of the theme,
“Peace, Justice, Poetry!” It’s a night of justice, conscious
socioploitical thought, family, survival and empowerment,
spirit—whatever advances the village! In the tradition of Emma
Goldman’s “Mother Earth” magazine, come drop some rad “fiyah”
on us, or contribute just with your presence and energy. By the way:
it’s a non-erotic venue, so rather than a love & erotica
evening, we focus the night on justice and other matters of life.
And, almost needless to say, leave the misogyny, homophobia and other
unnecessary ish outside!
We have to cap off
our run here with a double hit of dope poetic featured artists—and
Najya Williams & Carlynn Newhouse have got us covered!
Born and raised in
"Chocolate City” (Washington, DC), Najya Williams (she/her) is
a poet, filmmaker, and performer. The Harvard University graduate
and Temple University medical student is the author of the poetry
chapbook Cotton, which is a look through her eyes as a young,
Afro-Caribbean woman living in America. Her spoken word album, mad
black woman, explores themes of Black Marxism, righteous anger,
backstage performance, hypersexualized consumption of Black womxn,
and emotional labor. These works, as well as her original short
films, are available online via her website, najyawilliams.com. Her
commentaries can be found on her blog and in various online
publications. Najya advocates for prioritizing self-care and
self-preservation, especially in the Black community, and remains
committed to changing hearts and minds across the world, one word at
a time.

National Young Arts Finalist, and a three-time Youth Speaks Seattle
Grand Slam Champion, and ranked 4th in the 2020 Women of the World
Poetry Slam! Her work has been featured on platforms such as Button
Poetry, The Seattle Globalist, the Kennedy Center, and more. Her
deep love for poetry and arts education is matched only by her
commitment to social justice, youth empowerment, and as personal and
collective healing. Carlynn believes poetry is a form of activism
and a tool for raising awareness in hopes of making the world a safer
space!

The mic list will be
ready for you at Emma’s so you can get on the mic and share
something with us! Additionally, we’ll pass the bucket—physically
and electronically—to give something to our featured poets and to
help build for the future. Please help support artists!
The evening is,
indeed, brought to you by Red Emma’s Bookstore Coffeehouse, a
worker-owned and collectively operated restaurant, bookstore, and
community events space, currently located in Baltimore's Mt. Vernon
neighborhood, that is dedicated to putting principles of solidarity
and sustainability into practice in a democratic workplace!
