Events for November 2008
Wednesday Nov 5, 7:30PM @ 2640 : The Bread and Puppet Theater Presents Storm Office: A Storm Poem with Implementation Machine
We're thrilled to welcome the puppeteers of Bread and Puppet Theater back to 2640! Storm Office: A Storm Poem with Implementation Machine is a puppet and mask show, performed in and around a two-curtain box stage, using recent newspaper comments on recent storms and their relationship to politics. The performance will be a dumb show, speaking with pictures instead of words. The eye's understanding of the pictures goes by its own rules and does not comply with our word-oriented logic. Bread and Puppet Dumb Shows rely on a big collection of masks and puppets, representing all archetypal traits of the ancient and contemporary worlds. In this show, masked characters are joined by an airplane, a typewriter, a deer, a big fist and a little boat on a big ocean.
The show is in 3 parts:
Part 1 takes place in the Office Stage + the Storm Stage
Part 2 is a cantastoria presented by the Bread & Puppet Storm Orchestra
Part 3 is a sailboat called: We Are All in The Same Boat, which will take the audience on a journey through the streets.
"They are capable of nothing but inexplicable dumb shows and noise." - Hamlet
$5 - $10 sliding scale donation requested. Hope to see you there!
Friday Nov 7, 7PM @ Red Emma's : Mountain Resistance music: Here's to the Long Haul, Beans and Ryan Harvey of Riot Folk
More than a band playing both contemporary and traditional mountain music, Here's to the Long Haul is born of the historic and ongoing movements for justice in Appalachia and beyond. Just another offshoot of the deep and wandering roots of Appalachian music, fed by the waters of modern grassroots resistance to that which is wrong and the creation of that which is good in our mountains.
Ryan Harvey is one of Baltimor'e radical folk musicians, also of the Riot-Folk music collective.
Tuesday Nov 11, 7PM @ Red Emma's : Terrorizing Dissent
We know the police at the Republican National Convention did everything they could to prevent independent media from documenting the premeditated repression they chose to unleash on any one daring to dissent - but they failed. The amazing video-making Glass Bead Collective, in cooperation with Twin Cities Indymedia, has turned around a feature length documentary, Terrorizing Dissent, in just six weeks. We'll be screening this great film at Red Emma's for free - but be prepared to kick down some money to send to the legal support fund for RNC arrestees - there's a lot of people facing serious charges who need our support.
Wednesday Nov 12, 7PM @ Red Emma's : Reading and booksigning of "Teaching in Urban America: A formula for Change"
Walter Gill will be speaking on his book "Teaching in Urban America: A formula for Change", an easy to read common sense guide for educators, counselors, parents and youth advocates. The book encourages unconventional means to teaching and critically addresses educational structures such as standardized testing, the roles of students and teachers, as well as embracing urban culture, hip-hop as a teaching tool, and strongly emphasizing the arts.
Thursday Nov 13, 7PM @ 2640 : Red Emma's First Ever Art Auction!
The United States economy is crumbling around us. People are shaking
their heads in bewilderment and are looking for new systems. Well, it
turns out there are alternatives! There are even fun alternatives!
However, as of right now, the revolution may be fun, but it also has
to be funded. Red Emma's invites you to our
First-Ever ART AUCTION! From toy dinosaurs made out of rubberbands to
splendiferous creations by some of Baltimore's finest independent
artists, we guarantee there will be something for everyone! And
besides the thrill of bidding (both silent & live!), you can bask in
warm fuzzy feeling you get from knowing that your bids will help keep
your favorite, friendly, local, and radical bookstore coffeehouse open
for another year (and hopefully many more to come). We would love help
from the community to make this event a smashing success! If you are
artistic or crafty, why not donate a piece? Whether or not you are
artistically-inclined, why not come out and check out the show?!?! The
price ranges will allow everyone to take something home! Come out!
Come out!
Friday Nov 14, 7PM @ Red Emma's : Teaching Rebellion: Stories from the Grassroots Mobilization in Oaxaca: Speaking tour and book presentation
Join us for a special talk celebrating the release of the new book from PM Press, Teaching Rebellion. The book collects the stories of the 2006 revolt in Oaxaca, when, sparked by a teacher's strike for justice in education, an entire city rose up to demand the impossible. We'll be joined not only by Chris Thomas, member of Colectivos de Apoyo, Solidaridad y Acción, a grassroots support group centered around educational solidarity with Chiapas and Oaxaca, and which edited this amazing new collection, but by Silvia Hernández, a sociology student from Oaxaca who was active in the defense of the autonomous zones of liberated Oaxaca, and who has faced arrest and imprisonment from the government of Oaxaca for her continuing work against neoliberalism and corruption.
Sunday Nov 16, 5PM @ 2640 : Soldiers Are Refusing to Fight!
A Night with Iraq War Resisters
Featuring speakers from Iraq Veterans Against the War, Courage to Resist, DCOI, and 2 Videos!

Others have stayed in the country to join the movement against the war. Come to this incredible event to learn more about the war resistors reasoning, ambitions, motivations and struggles, as they fight to end these illegal and immoral occupations.
Friday Nov 21, 7PM @ Red Emma's : Stencil Nation: Graffiti, Community, and Art
Come to a prresentation and conversation with Russell Howze of Stencil Nation ...
Without a doubt, stencils are the fastest, easiest, and cheapest method for painting an image on a wall, a sidewalk, or practically anywhere. Stencil Nation focuses on the unexpected mix of this lively, accessible medium-from famous artists including Banksy to international street stencils and gallery shows-to reveal engaging aspects of an intentionally secretive creative community.
With dynamically illustrated perspectives from the niches of the art form, documentarians to the growing online community of the international scene are featured in this fresh collection of photographs and essays curated by StencilArchive.org's founder, Russell Howze. New artists, often utilizing stencil art in unconventional ways, are also featured.
Stencil Nation also represents the art of lesser-known urban scenes, including Poland, Romania, and Israel. Additionally, Stencil Nation builds upon previous published works to give the most extensive and up-to-date history of stencil art, as well as how-to tips from the artists themselves.
Russell Howze is the curator of StencilArchive.org. He lives in San Francisco.
Friday Nov 28, 7PM @ 2640 : Sweet Talk Rots Teeth: A Group Show at 2640
